Legowelt is one of the most overrated producers of our generation. How record companies put this half arsed watered down analog sounds out is beyond me. I listen to tons of records everyday at work and every time Legowelt crops up I always check it out just to see how bad it is, never expecting anything good. Last bit on lies was not too bad I guess but fuck me some of the releases are sooooooo dry too much going on with lame melodies over the top just bad noise. Had to get this off my chest. He’s probably a real nice dude and I shouldn’t say this shit especially on a free p2p music site but thats the generation we live in try before you buy and thank fuck because I personally would never invest in any of the music he has done to date. It just feels like he needs to spend a few more hours on each track to make them complete nothing ever sounds finished or satisfying.

      agreed!

I’m glad i’m not alone on this one. I respect him as a musician and he obvoilsy knows how to work a keyboard. I just think he could put a bit more elbow grease into his production and choose quality over quantity.

It aint all about crisp production or perfect mixing/mastering , you forget its more about the mood of the tracks and the melodies intertwining for this guy, listen to the album Dark Days 2.
Things don’t have to be overly-produced to sound mint , look at people like Demdike Stare , Hype Williams etc etc …

No it’s not about the sound quality, I love my lo-fi tape hiss ridden sounds a lot but the overall musicality is what is lacking in his productions.

      Regretfully agree

at least you have an opinion that needs to “get off your chest” about Legowelt. 99% of producers elicit far less emotion or response

That had to be said indeed !

I agree with the comment that it doesn’t have to be perfect, but he has a point with some of the sounds/melodies Legowelt chooses, I’ve had a hard time getting into his shit and yet he has a lot of respect from other producers, Actress, Ikonika etc.

I dunno… Haven’t heard anything yet that grabs me.

Amiga Railroad Adventures was the album that changed my opinion on Legowelt to like. I can see how the laidback VCR dub vibe comes off as boring or not trying too hard. Simple, disarming, ephemeral perhaps, but not pretentious. That said, so many releases are miss rather than hit.

i like legowelt. he makes good choons

I love Legowelt’s choons myself. Analogue or digital, I couldn’t care less. He is brilliant at what he does . It’s not groundbreaking but it’s emotive and assured synth techno. Just the latest in a long distinguished line of a Dutch/Belgian tradition of brilliant house and techno for me. For me, his music can be read as a useful counterpart to the house and techno coming from Amsterdam right now. Darker and with a more blatant pan-atlantic (read:industrial) palette with out of space vibezzzz. .. I’m sorry it’s rubbed you up the wrong way.

I’m joining the “no thanks” chorus. His music is boring ass fuck.

legowelt’s been up in the electro game for nearly 20 years. if there isnt more than less bangers in his discography that does it for you, then you’re probably a soulless robot.

I love that there’s all these dumb people out there that don’t ‘get’ Legowelt. This is amazing. I never knew.

To be fair to the guy I have heard one or two tracks in the past that he’s done which are pretty good but on a grand scale most of his tracks are just hot air that don’t do much, or create any emotion or atmosphere.
I’m not bothered if its a clean or ruff production/sound it’s just how ever the person intended it to sound. Personally I like the ruffer shit but thats just my personal taste, music is subjective and this is all just my opinion, but I can see there are some people that feel the same and some that don’t. The point is the underground music scene is so over saturated and there are shit loads of records being pumped out into this vast sea of music with producers just farting onto a real to reel and calling it a track. Don’t get me wrong I like the sound of tape saturation on tracks, and tracks that are just noise and experimental sounds, like ‘concrete fence’. (Not gonna name drop a load of artists but It’s just an aesthetic added to the sound. Whether music is analog or digital it’s doesn’t really matter as long as the music sounds good. Personally i’m a bit of a purist and prefer making music on analog equipment. My main point is quality over quantity and Legowelt appears to be pumping out a lot boring music into the world at the moment. It feels like the reason this is happening with a lot of producers is because of the amount of labels putting records out for the sake of putting records out to show they’re busy or some shit, Labels need to chill out and only put records in the world which are worth it.
