  3. glorybox December 30, 2013

disappointed tbh, not as good as her first EP. not as abstract and avant garde as i’d like. 5.5/10 ^_^

Agreed / MOR shite with less feeling —
Every track th’ same schtick as before. Flat affect an’ loops left idling or afraid to say anything definitive in case th’ flimsy veil o’ hype falls by th’ wayside. Every track th’ same structurally though paradoxically summing to nothing in th’ end. This is th’ music o’ apathy made for herds an’ cows.

“A fix is no longer a release, it’s a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues.”

[ Quoted from Actress “Ghettoville” Press Release ]

Less a statement about futility than a display o’ gross marketing an’ posturing behind words. Th’ expensive triple deluxe boxset from Ninja Tune is a complete hipster joke an’ perverse display o’ how much bullshit is in th’ so -called underground music industry. When th’ value proposition is to be found on th’ outside [ rather than inside ] then you know something’s up.

Furthermore Actress live sets have absolutely no consistency with th’ tenor o’ his productions either. They just reek o’ an inability to compose any lucid original ideas. In th’ olden days we used to call them “bullshit artists”. Nowadays we have adjectives like “spectral | elusive | ghostly”. All th’ Req One stuff on Ninja Tune 10 -years ago was pretty much th’ same hype train, no brains — just click buy.

Listen with your ears not with your eyes. Trust yourself or be prey to th’ fappery o’ mainstream online media. Regurgitating words an’ nonsense an’ how good that last Burial album was [ cough -cough ]. Th’ whole “atmospheric” angle doesn’t cut it either in th’ context o’ what other artists have achieved between th’ worn an’ weathered shores of “Techno A -Z”. Sandwell District is hugely overrated as well.

Here’s some other recent techno that you might enjoy along a similar axis o’ intent. Start as you mean to go on an’ flow my tears:

      Voices From The Lake “ST”
      Surgeon “Breaking Th’ Frame”
      Jan Jelinek “Farben” EP
      Ekoplekz “Memowrekz”

  10. YES December 31, 2013

Give it a few listens, it sinks in. I think Splaszh will alway be my favorite as it was my first introduction to him, but this is still terrific.

He’s going new places, trying to be challenging, nobody should be faulting him on that, it still sounds like an Actress release, it still sounds tight.

  11. i get it January 1, 2014

    • chuan_l January 3, 2014

  13. Ende Neu January 2, 2014

Collapsing new genres. Actress on point as ever. Shocked that people here aren’t feeling this album. Brilliant.

    • The Leuge January 3, 2014

Well, that would be rad. But many feel that the triumph of collapsing new genres is not his to win this time around.

      • chuan_l January 3, 2014

It takes a nation o’ hype to bring us down.

    • custard. January 6, 2014

Shocked that people have an opinion that’s not similar to yours?

      Wierdness…..
