If he were to pour his true heart into his music, his real life, instead of trying to sound “current”, then maybe it would be worth something, but as it stands, no… I can acquire this “hip sound” devoid of any real creativity and soul anywhere.
Track 10 has an once of quality, (and I’m not saying this because it’s beatless). But look at the sounds involved: he drew from his life!
Rule #1 for writers: Only write what you know. When this rule is broken you get garbage.
Likewise with music. We all know the “bands” you are trying to sound like. Fuck that. That won’t get you anywhere.
Do what you need to do find what you really love and really hate and really feel passionate about, not what you think you should love and hate (e.g. avoid trends, like, say, recycling for the planet). Do what you need to do to find the raw stuff of yourself and what you think is beautiful and make THAT.
Think of it this way: If you died, and there was an eternal heavenly afterlife, and this album was the music there, wouldn’t you just be CRESTFALLEN? You know you would.
