i hope song title s are no indication of the quality of the sound. pretentious is a word that comes to mind. now im going to go pet my fish.

    • not really September 19, 2012

ok,…i must say i love it. its bananas really. albeit completely with in his range of possible sounds. still very good. good one guys.

    • i'm like whut September 19, 2012

If you think these track titles are pretentious, you are hilarious and I want to hang out with you basically all of the time. I work from around 9 to 6 most days, but other than that, I’m more than happy to leave my girl and just hang out with you. Your outlook has to be so wonderfully far out that I can quit using drugs regularly.

Some quick examples: “All In” is a term used when making a risky bet. Using it as the title for the first song on an album that (based on these comments) is a bit different from his previous works, that sounds like a pretty perfect song title.

Naming a song “DMT Song” is hilariously unpretentious. He could’ve called it “The Spirit Molecule Song” or “Jewel Encrusted Reptilian Head Fuck Song.” Instead it’s hilariously bland; almost a rejection of the CRAZY effects of the mind-altering DMT.

I’m for real about that offer, though. Let’s hang. I want to know what you know. My pretention would ASTOUND you.

not a single useful review, good job nobody

    • evader September 19, 2012

3 songs in and I am quite enjoying this, sounds like his work with a jazzier more trip hop undertone, still very layered and same old interesting time signatures. 4th track is a bit more out there, think I’m going to enjoy this.

  20. Dustin Bieber September 19, 2012

BASS IN MY FACE! Thanks, this album is killer.

  21. bardo September 19, 2012

this is a much more subdued version of Mr.Lotus then I think we are all used to–i love it– nice to see him changing things up while retaining some of his signature sounds. why is it that “God forbid” we dont get the same sounding thing as last his last album– that it becomes shit immediately?

  22. theDoctor September 19, 2012

hey just wondering if someone could check the titles because they seem to not be correct – the track that says featuring Thom Yorke has no vocals, while another track def sounds like him

    • yeah September 20, 2012

      yeah

  23. Damn. September 19, 2012

WHOA THERE SON CALM THE FUCK DOWN

THIS GARBATION IS NO WHERE NEAR AOTY

  25. Well.... September 19, 2012

I like to consider myself to be a quite open minded person when it comes to new music or a different path a musician endeavors in the making of something fresh. But this album is just ok.
Plain ok. Keeping in mind that there are a couple of good beats and harmonies in here.
I’m a big fan of this guy, but as someone above stated, it’s pretty pretentious. For one, there is this Thundercat-style bass all over this piece (i love Thundercat, but this is supposed to be Fly Lo) and also, all of these ethereal pads make this entire album pretty monotonous. I get that he wants to reproduce a synesthetic tune of an ‘altered state of mind’ but its just not working for me. Almost all of the featured singers have a cheesy reverb making their voices float around and never really transmitting a real emotion.
I suppose he wanted a dream-like release, a concept album I guess. But to me, it’s just that. An ethereal fluid hovering above reverbs and the occasional signature beat. Not deep, not profound, just bland, almost to the point of playing this as background music instead of jamming at the foreground.

    • not really September 19, 2012

im the guy who said his titles were pretentious.but that may be just cuz im a brooklynite with an anti fluff chip built in. but i never said the music was that. further more. i dont know what u expected from the man. and why a preety awesome record seems to be benath contempt for u. anyeway. to each his own. however i will say to any reading this that ur comments sound a bit reactionary nd not indicative of the music it self., give it a listen folks no matter what i or any other n=know it all says. …true story.

      • Well.... September 19, 2012

Well, i can only talk in a reactionary fashion because I react to sound as I hear it with my ears and heart. I like it, but as I said its just O.K.
Ever since I started following this guy, his releases were always fucking aaaaahhh!!! Holy Shit!!! But that ‘waaah moment’ didn’t happen to me this time.
I get that he’s experimenting and pushing his own boundaries, which every self-respecting artist should do, (and comes in a natural way, usually) but I think this album didn’t quite made it to what I was expecting.
What was I expecting? Of course I didn’t know. This dude always produces awesome new stuff. But this just didn’t deliver the cheese for me. It’s just my own POV, and I’ve heard this album all day today, its just a bit bland as I said before. Also, if this album creates this amount of commotion, then we all know that’s a good thing.
And yes, everybody should listen to it and have their own opinion, I gave mine and hopefully someone else will have a completely different side, like you,
        Cheers

  26. whoa September 19, 2012

    kinda liked it. kinda.

  27. Teles September 19, 2012

Beuatifull album ! dreamfull and relaxing,he made a gread job !

  28. no name September 19, 2012

Wish people would learn to better contextualize music. This is reflective of a state that the artist is going through, as his previous albums have also done. It has its place in his releases, just as everything else has. It is different in many moments just as in his career as a musician. The word “pretentious” should not be confused with the word “concept,” though often it is. For those finding this difficult, think about the music as more than just an impression. FlyLo’s shit always goes beyond the immediate – what’s there in front of you. Don’t let that scare you, embrace it.

    • not really September 19, 2012

good review m8. i agree with u. context is not gonna hurt any of u.

HUR HUR HUR HEY EVERYONE IM GONNA USE WEED WHEN I LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM

  30. Brock Brobama September 19, 2012

    First listen – it’s a masterpiece.
I wonder what some of you would have said mere minutes after hearing “In a Silent Way.” Not comparing the two, but there is some amazing knee-jerk presumption going on here.

  31. Brock Brobama September 19, 2012

Second listen – it’s by far the best thing he’s ever done, and future consensus will prove me correct.

    • Cochese September 19, 2012

future consensus will side with Cosmogramma

      • no name September 19, 2012

        there is no future

    • MARCEL September 19, 2012

CURRENT CONSENSUS IS YOURE AN IDIOT

  32. matt j September 19, 2012

Its underwhelming to some degree.. but i applaud his ambission to go as far outside his comfort zone as he has here. people looking for the huge marmalade textured beats (thats right) on Los Angeles are going to be dissapointed but aside from a few clunker tracks there is definitely substance to be absorbed. U should probably smoke before listening is what im saying.

    • Freq September 19, 2012

doesn’t really sound outside his comfort zone, just sounds like a logical step in progression

      • matt j September 19, 2012

i agree but i just think this is the first release of his that some people might not understand, thus the “comfort zone” reference. but yea i actually think it might be more going outside the listeners comfort zone not his. i completely understand it.

  33. francesco September 19, 2012

    i’m so happy about all these comments… : )
…and now’s the time for my first listening…
    ‘later.

This is a total gem. The kids with their Beats by Dre looking for more cut and paste joints need not indulge. Steven is well into crafting some really next level magic right now, and for those who can’t really feel it, well, I hope someday they will. This is a masterwork, and it’s his third in a handful of years. Behold something truly beautiful and hold it close. And, well, Thundercat turns this rec out too! Man’s a monster. Huge!

  35. MARCEL September 19, 2012

Can you turn the caps lock option off of your keyboard, please? If I wanted to have a pretend conversation with my 10 year old brother, I’d look elsewhere, B. And grow some ear balls, mang. I know it’s not your fault you have a small capacity to understand the new record, but it still frustrates me that you don’t care.

  45. staringskye September 20, 2012

Wow i’m not a fan of the FlyLo but i liked UntiL the Quiet COmes, however this song and the video really impressed me….if FlyLo keeps making music like this, maturing and continuing to impress he will earn himself some more fans and less haters…

  46. meddlin old timer September 23, 2012

i haven’t read through all of this masive list of comments, but I will put in my two cents.
Flying Lotus is one of those artists that tends to prove the difference between generations. the first album got raves about how creative it was – to the point of ignoring all of the beat scientists that came 15 years before and blazed the way. there was nothing new about using a ping pong ball sound or such, artists had done it before – but most of those artists were european, so ignorant americans were like “whoa!”. whatever.
he does what he does and it speaks for itself. I was not seriously impressed with that album although there were a few standout tracks. to me, the american take on any type of electronic music tends to add anger, violent sounds, or an overly aggressive edge that puts me off.
I’ve heard the first single from this album, and I found that it showed that FL had matured and was seeking a more polished production, and i do not see why some people have a problem with artists ‘growing up’ and honing their skills. i’ve seen this pattern in the underground for a couple of decades and i call BS. most of the acts that people complain about modifying their sound or becoming too ‘commercial’ in terms of production are speaking about acts that had warped reviews to begin with.
reviewers tend to suck and be shortsighted for the most part. they see some things as being much much more innovative and out of the box than they actually are in terms of the scope of musical history. i constantly fell prey to such nonsense back in the early 90’s at the advent of the post rock movement. i kept expecting something to blow my socks off and kept finding nothing but boring mediocrity which i was told was supposedly groundbreaking and exciting. this can be applied to genre tagging as well.
i am anxious to give this a go and see how it is. truthfully, i don’t even listen to the first album anymore. i got bored rather quickly.
i get tired of the small minded take on electronic music of al genres these days. the next time i tell someone i listen to ‘electronic music’ and have someone rave about deadmau5 or bassnectar, i am going to punch them in the face – both of those artists make music that i would have put right back in the used bins back in the mid/late-nineties as dull, boring, and not nearly as creative as many people think.
it would be refreshing if the younger generation took the time to understand their musical history and how the different genres developed over the years, recognizing prime influences on movements and such. instead, too many of you spend so much time patting each other on the backs about mediocre creativity that we seem to have lost sight as to what real creativity is these days.
enough ranting…..let the music speak for itself. it’s all aesthetic values anyway and no opinion actually holds any objective weight.

is it just me or the sound quality of this rip is utter shit?

    • nothingman September 24, 2012

cause this is a vinyl rip

  48. Game|Boy October 3, 2012

Some time hype can kill a man.
Been on the radar since his adult swim drops, he’s progressed, but there’s a certain time when you come back to yourself, become more centered once your ‘newness’ in the mainstream public eye fades.
Once the hype is gone his beats will rearrange. Or not.

  49. manulito October 3, 2012

i don’t know, if it was the quality, or something else about this rip was totally off, but i now listened to the official released album and it sound 10000x better.
