I’ve not read The Diamond Age, but I know there is a character called Sonmi-451 in David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, which is a masterwork. That’s enough for me to give this a try, and I’ll have to check out The Diamond Age as well, if that’s what Mitchell was paying homage to in CA.
Cripes!!
No, you are right! That’s where it’s from.
Excellent “part” of the book. Sort of a short story in the book if you will. Such a well written “slipsteam” novel, (not crazy about that word), it nearly transcends what one expects.
However, I hold that if you like Cloud Atlas you’ll love Diamond Age, or… “Anubis Gates” by..oh, I can’t recall, but like the aforementioned it also is, well, MORE than just sci-fi. ;)

Nice.
By the way, the name of this “Sonmi451” comes from one of the best, maybe THE best sci-fi novel I have read: “The Diamond Age”
