At least the movie is. ;)
It is good, but different – if you’d expect some portishead’ish songs you might be disappointed, but overall it’s an interesting piece of work and especially in the context of the movie it’s extremly good.

    alex garland flopps it, mopsy!

movie is just pretty AI non-sense that is not even up to the usual fun plot that AG writes
bad science & philosophy for dummies
it’s just another religious story of high improbables that’s pretty to look at with an Oliver Sachs-like evil genius, a computer jerk-off as mr Anti-Bond, and a wardrobe full of female eunichs for non-mental masturbatory fantasies that amount to a Turing Test.

      Wow… interesting take.

I’d say if anything it’s (partly) about how flawed – because limited in its basic assumptions – the whole idea of the Turing Test is – and I reckon it makes the point pretty well… The guy who’s talking to the gynoid isn’t trying to tell whether she’s a machine or human (which is what the Turing Test is about) – he can see she’s a machine; his issue is that of trying to determine whether she’s conscious/aware/sentient or not. And much of the emphasis is on all the non-abstract, messy, non-verbal emotional and sensory issues that are involved in making such a decision.

Even the idea of masturbatory fantasies is more of a point that i think the film’s deliberately making (re: the long history of gynoids as typically male fantasies, and what that might say about how a lot of men actually interact with real women) than a ‘fault’ that can be legitimately pinned on the film itself. Sure, it’s all a matter of taste, yeh, but I actually liked the film, and I’m used to being pretty disappointed with most sci-fi.
By the way, dis, on the basis of what you’ve typed onscreen here (which is exactly the sort of information I would expect in a classic Turing Test) I’m not entirely convinced that you’re human yourself ;)

What distinguishes the human kind from primates (an ape, or gorilla) is the human minds ability to reflect, everything else is pretty much the same (language skills, listen to how people communicate to one another these days, a grunt, or a shriek) and the brain works pretty much like a Turing machine or code like C++ or Java Script, if not this, then this and so on and so forth. Sentient beings coming to life through an organic process, robots being programmed and built by those organic beings. It is a fine line that will be breached in the near future. For all of you guys who don’t have the skills to get a date on Friday night, look ahead, your dream machine is on the way.
